Are You an Empath? Part Two

I’m notorious for having the most boring dreams. Unloading the dishwasher for example. Need I say more? But the other night I had a doozy. I don’t think there’s any deep meaning to it. I just think it speaks to how crazy I am! So here’s the dream. The son of one of our ex-neighbors, who we’ve known since he was 2 years old and who has been a dear friend of Erik’s, has been losing his hair just as his father did. He came to me for help, so what did I do? I sutured a giant burrito on top of his scalp and installed a thin wooden frame around it. I struggled, though, because a small piece of the frame broke off, and I had to keep glueing it on over and over. Chris would move before the glue dried, so it would fall off. I was so irritated. And when he wiggled, parts of the inside of the giant burrito would leak out so that I’d have to keep stuffing it in. I wanted it to be perfect because Chris was supposed to deliver the burrito, in all of its glory, to my daughter, Kristina, as a present. I think having the occasional weird dream runs in my family. My sister, Laura, who is a cleaning freak, has ones where she is saving the world, Bruce Willis style, but always lugs around a laundry basket full of clothes. Seems like that would definitely cramp your style when you’re trying to go all Krav Maga on someone’s ass, but in her case, it doesn’t. Plus, she always gets her laundry washed, folded and put away because she truly is a superwoman.

Enjoy today’s post!

Me: Is there anything else characteristic of an empath?

Erik: Lot’s of allergies, random aches and pains. They have a more sensitive digestive system, a more sensitive palate. They can taste flavors more than other people. They hear sounds better than other people, and it’s not like it’s because they’re—

Me: Superhuman!

Erik: Yeah. It’s not like their tongue and ears are better. Imagine that the whole energetic body, three feet around them, is processing information with such clarity and then it goes to their head where it’s acknowledged that the person next to you isn’t experiencing that shit. They’re just relying on the strength of the taste buds on their tongue or what their ears hear. That’s it. Touch, weather, temperature. They chill and overheat more easily. That’s because their energetic body is processing it 100 times more than their physical body is. When you can identify that that’s how you are—watch the Forgiveness YouTube with the mantra—and say, “Ommm, this is mine; that is yours. Ommm, this is mine; that is yours.”

Again, he says this in a monotone voice.

Erik: That’s great for an empath because you need to figure out what your feelings are and what belongs to everybody else. In that process of identifying what’s yours and what’s the other person’s, you can start laying down your boundaries. It’s like being –

Jamie laughs.

Jamie: I love these things he does!

Erik: It’s like being naked. When you’re neck-id (remember, he’s a Texan, and that how we say “naked.”) everybody can see you. You’re visible to all. There are no boundaries. An empath is like that, so identifying what’s yours and what’s everyone else’s is like putting clothes on. All of a sudden, you have this boundary. People can’t see or access your nakedness. That’s what you really want to have as an empath. Then you can rely on that clothing to protect you from the weather, protect you from what other people are feeling because you’re going to be able to quickly say, “Hey, that’s not mine.” You take the information and you know that person’s hurting and sad, not you. So you don’t have to have your mood swing into depression because it didn’t really belong to you to begin with, and you now know how to communicate with that person and be present with them. Or how to avoid them!

Jamie laughs.

Me: You know, it seems like three of your siblings are empaths just because of what you’re saying. Am I right?

Erik: Yes!

Me: Michelle, Annika and Lukas. Are they?

Erik: Yes.

Me: And Pappa is not. I know that!

Erik shakes his head.

Me: Hell, no. He’s probably the opposite. What about me? Am I an empath?

Erik: Yes, but your logic gets in the way a lot, and that shuts it down because you want to organize the information and you want to know where it’s from. That’s important for you though it kind of closes it down a little bit.

Me: Is being an empath a good thing, then?

Erik: Yeah, it’s our natural state of being.

Me: Oh, wow. So all you have to do is protect yourself and it’s—well I hate to put a hierarchy on it, but to understand this, I have to—it is a more evolved state then? Or a more natural state, shall I say.

Jamie: Yeah, he agrees. Definitely more natural. It’s absolutely who we are.

Me: But our society is not very conducive to the well-being of empaths.

Erik: Hell, no, and so when we look at empaths, we can say it’s more evolved, but it’s basically getting back to the roots, getting back to our natural state of being.

Me: What sort of things does society do that makes life hard for empaths?

Erik: [Require] conformity. That’s a huge one right there.

Me: Do empaths have trouble with conformity?

Erik: Yeah, because they need to respond to the information they’re getting energetically—

Me: And not what external society is feeding them.

Erik: Mm hm.

Me: Okay.

Erik: Society will say (in a very sassy, condescending voice,): “Well how the fuck do you know that? We can’t rely on that then. We can’t go with your gut instinct. Sorry. We can’t not hire that person because you got a bad feeling.”

Me: Boy, your personification of society is a bitch!

Jamie laughs.

Erik: Thank you.

Me: What else about society?

Erik: They’re quick to judge and medicate. That’s extremely difficult for empathics to handle. Society is geared toward the extroverts, and empaths aren’t extroverts. They have their moments in the sun, but they don’t go all out because they’re processing so much more than the rest of us. Even classrooms and workplaces are designed for the extrovert. “Let’s not have private cubbies anymore. Let’s all work together at one big table,” and there’s the empath going, “Fuck! Now I have to deal with everybody? Ugh!”

Me: Oh, man. Well, it seems like if you’re an empath who can process everything okay, you could be an extrovert. Being an introvert is an empath that doesn’t know how to protect himself or herself. Is that right?

Erik: Yeah, they’re not doing the, “This is mine; that is yours” shit.

Me: So a healthy empath could be an extrovert?

Erik: Yes.

Me: Okay. Are they Starseeds or something? Why are some people empaths and some aren’t? Are they from other planetary systems or…?

Erik: Nah, that’s on an individual basis. That wouldn’t be an in general characteristic.

Me: Well, why do some people come here as empaths and some don’t?

Erik: It could relate to their spiritual contract and the lessons they want. It could just be the natural ability that they have.

Me: Okay.

Erik: Also, as we’re growing in—and I’m speaking in linear terms— we’re growing now and more of this is coming in and where before this was shot down when [a kid] is around 6 or 7, we’re seeing the value. We’re going back to creative arts mode. That’s what’s going to throw us into enlightenment. We had heavy science mode with exploration and discovery, and now we’re getting into creativity where innovation is extremely important. Businesses and schools are aiming for that, and with that comes intuition and imagination. That enhances our abilities to be clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient, claircognizant, empathic, all that jazz.

Jamie mimics his jazz fingers.

Me: All that jazz fingers.

Stay tuned for the last part tomorrow!
