Elisa Medhus is a physician and mother of 5, who tragically lost her son to bipolar disorder/suicide in 2009. I found this book really, really interesting because she comes from a scientific background and atheist parents, and chronicles her journey to discovering spirituality and the afterlife (or “heaven”, whatever you prefer to call it) in a very realistic, approachable way. She began communicating with her son via mediums, and decided to chronicle those experiences on a blog, which she called simply Channeling Erik. I have been reading the blog “Channeling Erik” for about 6 months now. I am also a paranormal investigator and everything that Erik has been communicating correlates with my own research. Things started happening in such a way as to change her mind….. Finally a book that will help others get their minds out of the little tightly sealed box that society has put them in. Yes there is life after death, absolutely! We are but a consciousness that is using these bodies so that we can gain experiences here on this dense physical plain. Dr Medhus took a tragic event and turned it into a “go to book” that will help other heart broken people that have suffered the tragic loss of a loved one, giving them comfort in knowing that their loved ones are all okay and even seeking to help you with your grief from the other side. This book will also give you “true” and “honest” answers to most if not all of your questions about the after life. It is by far the most authoritative and true book that I have ever read (and I have read volumes of books) about the after life. After watching my parents age and eventually die. I had a lot of questions. The majority of which were answered by events that occurred in my life. I had for a very long time wondered why I was here and what was I suppose to accomplish. While I cannot claim a light bulb (ah ha) moment I firmly believe that we are all here to learn from each other and teach each other.
This book confirms a significant portion of that belief.
While I choose not to discuss my personal experiences in this review I do feel that this book was well worth my time.

I have been curious about spirit, the afterlife, psychics/mediums etc. all of my adult life. Started reading Shirley McClain’s (sp) books way back when. This curiosity increased as my family members started to die off…my father, my grandmother, my mother, and most recently and only two months apart my sister and my brother. I always felt that we were reincarnated, even as a child, but didn’t know what to do with that”thought”.I was raised Christian but church was not a huge priority growing up.Elisa Medhus’s book has helped me “connect the dots” about the afterlife. I bought the book version rather than kindle as I wanted to be able to touch it. I have been a member of the blog for awhile now.. so it was with much anticipation that I looked forward to this book.
I felt Elisa’s grief in the forward.. yet with much courage and curiosity she began her own journey of expanding awareness along with her son Erik from the other side.
The book begins simply.. with stories and laughs.. a kind-of ‘getting to know Erik’ introduction. It progresses into more and more complex questions/answers as the chapters proceed. If you have read other books on metaphysical topics this one will echo the others well and add a few things too.. if this is your first introduction to ‘the other side’ then this will open your own doors of curiosity and hunger to know more.
What I LOVED about this book is that it contains the energy of Elisa and Erik both. I felt connected to them both while reading.. as if having a phone conversation with old friends. I read EVERY single word (even including the acknowledgments, LOL)because I did not want it to end. I wanted the conversation to continue! Enlightening, thank you…before the loss of my son, I never really thought about death. I never lost anyone that I was so close too, I guess I was lucky. Since 9/11/11, I have thought of almost nothing else. I wondered about all the signs I was getting from my son and thinking, am I just imaging these things? Are they real? A circuitous path that began when I was trying to create a name for our band led me to the Channeling Erik blog. Through this blog, my wife and I were introduced to a new concept—communication with dead loved ones. Thus began an exciting journey. As we began communicating with Spirit, our grief over the loss of loved ones was healed because these souls were no longer “dead to us”. My name is Rebecca and I am 22 years old. I live in Portland Maine. Last night I was browsing through my google books and stumbled across yours. I honestly have been dealing with grief of a suicide myself (of a dear friend I went to high school with earlier this year) who’s name was Billy. I never really thought that I’d stumble across a book that spoke to me intuitively. I had no idea what it would be about fully, but took the leap of faith and bought it because the little voice in back of my mind and in my heart told me to for no apparent reason. I started reading and was completely stunned and amazed. I had lost faith recently that our loved ones are still with us after they pass. My depression has stumbled, but this book has given me a peace of mind and a sense of belief again. I am convinced that for some reason Erik knew somehow through the energies in the universe that I was suffering and needed some comfort. I have prayed often for a sign that my friend is okay, and hoped someone in the afterlife would send me that sign if Billy couldn’t. Nothing else would explain the goosebumps I felt one day when I was sitting on my porch about to cry over the loss of my friend. I also have seen the most dragonflys that I’ve ever seen in my life this summer.

Thank you for your book and thank you for you and all of your son’s help. Please tell him I am extremely grateful. I don’t know what I would do if I never found this book.

I am smack dab in the middle of a personal journey through the literature of life and death and the human struggle. Your story has helped me much, and especially today. I find the things that are helpful to me always just arrive, and my job is to notice them and to make use of them. Your story is such a gift. I found it today, or rather, it was presented to me today, and it has given me MUCH comfort and made me think think think. Erik’s story reminds me of Bob Monroe’s “Journey” series. I think I see much commonality in Erik’s descriptions and Bob Monroe’s.

The kernel of understanding these descriptions is, to me, the fact that it is required that the Devachan (she spirit side of the human dipole, the Yin to the Earthly Yang) must be translated into 3D Earth comprehensibility to be shared among those of us “here/now”.

This happens through metaphor. Everything is rendered for us here metaphorically. Everything. It is this rendering into language and symbol, understandable by living flesh-and-bone humans, that introduces the variation in reported stories about the Devachan and etc. These reports must be decoded, and the decoding happens in the cultural and personal context of the reporter. This is why there is such variation in reported experience. That, and that the experience is actually varied based on the expectations (and therefore the creations) of the experiencer (the Departed one).

That said as well, there is much commonality in reports. This can be discerned and distilled into a reasonable facsimile of “what it is like” on the spirit side. I particularly like Huxley’s “Perrenial Philosophy” as a primer. Invaluable.

I believe the Veil of Isis is thinning and billowing, and this is why we are hearing more and more of this stuff, and are more and more interested in it. We are in a transition as a species, and are moving into a more fluid relationship with our “other half” as well as the larger, grander Soul of which we are part.

The immediate future is one of interesting times, as the Chinese might say.
