As I’ve said time and time again, Erik is no Dalai Lama or Deepak Chopra. He’s just a boy with a less than eloquent vocabulary. But that in and of itself gives him a mass appeal. Here’s what he has to say about that.

Me: Hi Erik!
Erik: Hi Mom!
Me: Hey, the first book is in the editing phase!
Erik: I know.
Me: What do you think about us going on the Chelsey Lately Show? You’d be perfect for that. She lost her brother and mother, you know.
Erik: My only—
Jamie (to Erik): That’s your only hang up?
Jamie: His only hang up is that he gets to keep his personality.
Me: That’s good though. Don’t you want to?
Erik: Yeah. I just don’t want us to accept something just because we think it’s a good move and we have to tone it down.
Me: Oh, in other words, you don’t want to take the Erikness out of it.
Erik: Yeah. What good is that?
Me: Yeah, I know!
Erik: How are all the other assholes in America suppose to learn about spirituality if I have to take the Erik out of it?
Me: I know! I know!
Jamie laughs hard!
Jamie: That was such a great visual, too.
Me: What did he give you?
Jamie: Like, sorry, it sounds very stereotypical, but all of the saltier people, the sailors. You know, how are they connecting to Deepak Chopra?
Me: I know; I know! That’s true.
Jamie and I laugh.
Jamie: You know, just give them an Erik.
Erik: They’ll fucking believe!
Jamie laughs.
Me: You gotta connect with “Every Man.” Erik’s our Every Man.
Erik: Mom, I don’t think I so much attract the preachers and the ministers. I think they’re a bit appalled by my harshness.
Me: Oh, well, That’s okay. They’re sort of the minority anyway. They’re beyond breaking into.
Jamie’s still belly laughing.
Me: It only hurts when you laugh, Jamie. Be careful with her, Erik. Don’t make her laugh too hard.
Jamie: He’s been messing with me all day. I couldn’t concentrate during the last reading!
Me: Erik!
Jamie (chuckling): It’s okay. This is my last one today.
