Erik’s Message to Aunt Laura

My younger sister, Laura, is one of the best cooks I have ever known. She thrives on nurturing others, healing and sending love in the way of food. Every Christmas, she bakes around 200 dozen cookies that are so freaking delicious that I secretly think she laces them with crystal meth. Just saying’. In fact, several of her lucky recipients knock at her door the day after getting their high calorie gift to ask if they can order ten more tins.

I suggested to her that she should start a cookie business of her own and, after reviewing all of the laws and regulations, she has decided to do just that. I told her I would help her as a humble pair of extra hands, and so she decided to call her enterprise, “Two Sisters Treats,” at least for now.

I asked Erik yesterday if he thought this was a good idea and he replied:

“God yes. She’ll start out small and will eventually create a multi-million dollar company.”

After the session, I drove to McD’s to get my usual Diet Dr. Pepper (to save my calorie allowance for those addictive cookies of hers). I had to use Michelle’s car, because Rune was borrowing mine. His truck is in the shop for an oil leak. Now, I always pay with a credit card. Always. It’s been over a decade since I used cash to buy my morning drink. In fact, I had my credit card in my had while I was waiting in line at the drive in.

For some reason, I was drawn to the collection of money in Michelle’s coin holder. “I’ll use her coins to pay this time.” Now, that’s a warped idea since she’s as poor as a church mouse, but nonetheless, I put my credit card back in my wallet and plucked the first two coins out of the spring-loaded coin dispenser. Two nickels. Something (or someone) compelled me to look at the dates (something I haven’t done in years,) and guess what they were? The first was 1956, my sister’s birth year, and the second one was 1955, my birth year. It’s not very common to see coins as old as Methuselah (and me).

Was this a message from Erik that we–the two sisters–need to work together on this endeavor, her as the head, the mastermind, and me as the loyal minion? You be the judge.
